British activist Sasha Johnson, who played the lead role in Black Lives Matter and anti-racist demonstrations, was shot and wounded in London, CBS News reports.
The Taking the Initiative Party (TTIP) said Statement, “It is with great sadness to be informed that our own Sasha Johnson has been brutally attacked and a gunshot wound to her head. She is currently in intensive care and in critical condition.”
The statement also said that the 27-year-old was attacked after multiple death threats as a result of his activism. “
BBC Reports say London’s Metropolitan Police responded to gunshots in south-east London around 3 am Sunday morning and the incident allegedly took place near a house party. Officials said there was no evidence that she was the target of the attack.
Imran Ayton, a friend of Johnson’s, told the BBC that he did not believe Johnson was “the intended victim” and “as far as I know … the incident is more related to rival gangs as opposed to his activism.” She also said that Johnson had surgery on her and went well, and that she was with her parents, although authorities have not confirmed it.
“It was a shocking incident in which a young woman has suffered very serious injuries,” said London Metro Police Chief Inspector Jimmy Tele. Statement, “Our condolences are with his family who are being assisted in this very difficult time.”
As news of Johnson’s shooting surfaced, there has been a flood of concern and support, especially from the activist community.
