Debbie Allen Receives Governor’s Award At 2021 Emmys For Decades-Long Impact

Debbie Allen Took home one of the highest honors of the evening. The five-time Emmy Award winner accepted the Governor’s Award for her achievements on television and on stage. Known for her long resume as a director of several shows such as a different worldhandjob everybody Hates Chris And Grey’s Anatomy, Where she also acts, she got emotional as she accepted the award and celebrated the people she brought with her.

“Sometimes it takes a lot of courage to be the only woman in the room,” said 71-year-old Allen, wiping tears. “A lot of courage and creativity and fighting and faith to believe that I can move on. And I have and I’ve brought a lot of people with me.”

Before leaving the stage, she delivered an important message for the future and women: “Let this moment resonate with women in this country and around the world. From Texas to Afghanistan. let them know.

“And even with young people who don’t have the vote, who can’t even get a vaccine, they’re giving the world an inheritance that we leave them,” she continued. “It’s time for you to claim your power, claim your voice, sing your song, tell your story. It will make us a better place. Your turn.”
