Aashram Season 3 Web Series Download in 480p, 720p, 1080p: Self-styled godman Nirala is back with ten more episodes in the third season of Prakash Jha’s popular series Ashram.

The series is now officially called an infamous…ashram, possibly to avoid offending some. However, the title change doesn’t help the show avoid hurting the intelligence of the viewers.

At its core, Ashram is a crime drama-cum-thriller but moves at a snail’s pace. With the absence of thrill and a tone that belongs to the 90s, the show is formulaic and corny, only saved by the performances of some of its principal cast members.

The ashram follows the adventures of Baba Nirala (Bobby Deol), a cleric/thug building a political/criminal empire under the guise of a spiritual enterprise.

It starts from last season when one of his disciples Pammi (Aditi Pohankar) escaped from his clutches after being sexually abused by him and is now out for revenge.

In the background are several characters and plot lines about Baba’s longing for power and women and the changing political fate of his ashram’s kingdom.

Aashram is built on a solid idea. Internationally, shows about fraud godmen and their cults have been critically acclaimed and well received by the audience. But Aashram lacks the finesse of something like Waco, True Detective season 1, or even Orphan Black. It does not believe in the art of subtlety.

The drama is magnified, the music is loud (more on that later), and the performances over the top. There is no nudity or vulgarity but at times the show tends to titillate. The tone feels like that of a 90s crime drama at times and not one of the good Abbas-Mustan ones, but the corny Rajiv Rai ones with continuity errors.

My biggest issue with Aashram is how it treats its women. It is sad that the show has come from Prakash Jha, the man who gave a strong female cop in Jai Gangaajal.

But Aashram adopts a piercing male gaze when it comes to the depiction of its women, even those in the position of power. It brings in Esha Gupta, who plays an internationally-renowned publicist and brand consultant.

Aashram chooses to introduce her with a seductive dance sequence. Some might say there was a need for that sequence in the plot but what it essentially does is reduce a successful, powerful female character to an object of sexual interest, dancing for a more powerful male character.

The first two seasons of ‘Aashram’, in 2020, followed within a few months of each other. This third season has taken two years. About the only difference this time around is in its name: it has turned into ‘Ek Badnaam Aashram’, so that there is no doubt in our minds that this ashram is a bad place, run by an evil baba, and his equally evil cohorts.

But we already knew that. So, what’s new? We have been a witness to the ‘kali kartoots’ (black deeds) of Baba Nirala (Bobby Deol) and his faithful sidekick Bhopa (Chandan Roy Sanyal), which included deflowering young virgins, castrating young faithfuls in the name of ‘shuddhikaran’ (purification), lacing laddoos with intoxicants, and meddling in the politics of the place where this very Dera Sachcha Sauda-like ashram exists.

It was already feeling old by the time the second season drew to an end. And this time, it’s just more of the dreary same: when we see a pubescent young woman, not quite all there, accompanied by her parents fetching up at the baba’s durbaar for a ‘cure’, we know what fate will befall her.

The canny old politician, nursing his grievances against the baba’s betrayal, will do a volte-face. The fresh-faced CM and his sprawling constituency will become the hotbed of conspiracy.

The most interesting character in the series, Pammi Pehelwan (Aaditi Pohankar), a Dalit young woman who wants to become a boxing champion, and whose rebellious streak was shaping to give the baba a run for his illicit money, has been turned into a sobbing, simpering thing. The other characters who had something to do before this, are left to fend for themselves.
