Will Loki’s overarching story blend well with elements of the crime process?
The first episode of Marvel’s latest small-screen project gave us a little good-cop/bad-cop stuff, with some interrogation room tactics woven into Owen Wilson’s form of Mobius M. Mobius by the “go inside the mind of an assassin” route. went down, and Loki’s second episode continues the procedural vibe.
A fairly traditional teaser sets Episode 2 as C-20 (Sasha Lane from American Honey) and her squad of TVA Hunters on the loose at a renaissance fair in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in the mid-80s with a reported version arrives to investigate. The team is attacked by the Minuteman-killing Loki variant mentioned by Mobius at the end of the previous episode, and Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” with the rest of the scene may or may not be the most intense online. Maybe cut I’ve ever seen.

Terrible Miss Minute Impression: Hello! You might be asking yourself what a “teaser” or “cold open” is! Let me speed you up A teaser is a narrative technique used at the beginning of a TV episode to attract viewers to keep watching. This is usually the first building block of the mystery of that episode in the crime process. A good cold openness compels us to stick around and figure out “Whodnit”, why, or how!
Back on TVA, Loki is learning – or half-learning – what happens when a Nexus event passes the red line and they can’t reset it: the destruction of the sacred timeline. Throughout the lesson Miss Minutes acts as Gal Friday, despite whose enthusiasm Loki is little admired, and she calls him a jerk. which he absolutely is. Nevertheless, the view is adorable. If Roger Rabbit Has to Be Framed? Remake Our Future, put Tom Hiddleston in there as Eddie Valiant and you can build a strong bridge from my suspension of disbelief.
Some specific temporary energy has informed TVA that the Loki variant was actually responsible for the ambush on C-20’s team. Hunters are used to dealing with Loki variants – apparently they bite Lokis “almost more than any other variant”. Slippery little crook though he may be, it turns out to be quite an important piece of information. Are these variants like Raptor inadvertently testing the fence? Also, can we guess who might lead the pack when it comes to variant numbers if Loki is in second place? Keep doing background checks on TVA! We’ve already seen a Skrull and Peggy Carter.
Our Loki is being teased by the possibility that he might snag the audience with time-keepers if he’s useful enough, leaning into the tried-and-true cop show “If you cooperate you’re immune or less can get punished” trope. Loki buys it, but it seems incredibly unlikely that it’s anything but manipulative crap on Mobius’ part.
We also get to spend some alone time with Moebius and Judge Ravona Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) in this episode. The pair have clearly known each other for a long time but the Rensselaer now has the incredible task of riding the line between boss and friend. He’s steady and calm, but you can still imagine him as Loki’s own police chief: making laws with Mobius, calling him a “loose cannon” for allowing Loki to get into the fold, and making him his own. Badges and asking to turn on the gun – or whatever the TVA equivalent is.
His interactions with Renslayer are probably supposed to be fascinating, but they’re actually a bit annoying, though I can’t put my finger on it just yet.
Mobius emerges from the meeting and finds Loki even more determined to pick up the pace. He tries to outsmart the manipulator with his firm but soft-spoken psyche, saying that the troubled killer version is the “better version” of Loki. Our Loki is just a “scared little boy”. I mean, why are you booing him? he is right.
Loki is hired to work on the research beat at TVA, poring through case files and having a fun conversation with the live-action Rose from Monsters, Inc. The stakes are high here. Loki’s life largely depends on him finding a breadcrumb or two, and luckily he manages it during an emotional scene where he processes the Asgard, the house he grew up in and then left. Gone. And he didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye.
He digs deep into the destruction of Asgard and finds that no variance energy was detected at Ground Zero and is an epiphany (mmm, we’ll get back to that, no one here is ready for my miss minute yet) , at least all of me) that the show is hoping you don’t ask too many difficult questions.
