“The government may be yours, but the system is ours” (“The government may be yours, the system is ours”) – this dialogue from the Huma Qureshi-starrer web series Maharani, might well capture the upper caste reaction.
Leaders of oppressed castes in the Hindi belt in the last three decades. Set in Bihar of the 1990s, Maharani on Sony Liv is based on Rabri Devi’s tenure as the chief minister of the state after Lalu Prasad Yadav’s name surfaced in the fodder scam.
In the series, Rani Bharti (played by Huma Qureshi) is shown becoming chief minister after being paralyzed after being shot by assassins by her husband and Bihar chief minister Bhim Singh Bharti (played by Soham Shah).

Though simplistic and even nave at times, the series is well made and takes the political drama genre on the OTT platform up several notches from recent efforts such as Tackle Tandav.
It has some really good performances, especially Huma Qureshi, Amit Syal, Inamulhaq and Pramod Pathak.
But the most important aspect of Maharani is that it takes the debate forward in the portrayal of caste in Bollywood.
The series shows several massacres of Dalits similar to those carried out by the infamous Ranvir Sena in the 1990s.
The most horrific massacre is shown in Laxmanpur, which is clearly a reference to the 1997 Laxmanpur Bathe massacre in which over 100 Ranvir Sena militants killed 58 Dalits and OBCs, most of them women and children.
Significantly, this sequence does not stop only to show caste atrocities, but also makes a point to show the justification of the upper caste.
An upper caste soldier is shown saying, “When you forget your status, then there will be Laxmanpur” (whenever you (lower caste) forget your place, there will be a massacre like Laxmanpur).
