Paper Rocket is a touching take on grief, guilt, love, loss and anger. Even if it works controversially on mental health, the series is largely harmless because it never offers a comprehensive solution.

Jeeva (Kalidas Jayaram), is a high-flying corporate executive who fails to make time for his doting dad Gunaseelan (Nagineedu) who stays in his quaint little hometown. When the latter passes away, Jeeva’s world crumbles and the grief makes him an insomniac.
Soon after, Jeeva meets psychologist Dr Sheila (Poornima Bhagyaraj), who ushers him into a group therapy session.
It is here that we meet the motley group of people — Ilakiya (Tanya Ravichandran), Tiger (Karunakaran), Valliyamma (Renuka), Charu (Gouri G Kishan), and Unni (Nirmal Palazhi) — who embark on a wondrous journey together in search of one thing that eludes all of them… inner peace.
Grief is like love. We never know when it will strike us, and there is no one way to deal with it. Like love, grief is also very personal.
The sudden loss of excessive love is deeply saddened. More often than not, with grief comes a side sequence of guilt. This guilt can manifest in a variety of ways and reside in grieving people, not only for themselves, but also for others.
It is the performance that is the wind beneath this paper rocket, and it is largely the well-acted ensemble that establishes the importance of good casting. Nirmal Palazzi is a revelation and Renuka stands out with her heartfelt laugh and empty eyes slowly finding solace in the group.
In Kiruthiga Udayanidhi’s Paper Rocket, a group of patients undergoing treatment decide to go on a journey. This journey will ultimately help them much more than their healing.
Essentially, this means that Paper Rocket is a road movie, sorry, road series to be more precise, if that’s an accepted term. And that in turn would mean that the characters, their arc and their emotions matter more than the plot.

The series deals with a number of themes including death, guilt, ambitions, uncertainty, closure, etc. The story revolves around a few people who all know each other through group therapy.
Their life turns serendipitous when one day a new entrant Jeeva is their key to ticking off the last things on their bucket list. How they take upon this journey with the different kinds of problems and mental health issues they have, forms the rest of the story.
The series deals with grief most of all. It touches on important subjects including depression, sexual abuse, the loss of your loved ones, life after a serious injury, etc. Generally, a show dealing with grief tends to make the audience morose with melancholy music to go with it.
Surprisingly, this series makes you laugh at the most unexpected times. The way it deals with grief and closure gives us some hope about future challenges we may encounter in life.
