Within two minutes of the start of Raksha Bandhan, you’re confused: is it 2022 or 1962? The focus of ‘Raksha Bandhan’ is a film about a man with four younger sisters who is only concerned with one thing: how to get them’married off,’ and the lengths he will go to achieve that goal.
It’s not as if there aren’t brothers who are completely dedicated to their sisters’ well-being in this day and age. Sibling love has always played an important role in Hindi cinema. However, both the plot and, more importantly, how it is handled take us back in time, and not in a good way.

Lala Kedarnath (Akshay Kumar) owns a ‘chaat-ki-dukaan’ in Chandni Chowk with a unique USP: all pregnant women who eat his ‘gol-gappas’ will have sons. Boom. Your jaw drops as your first gong falls. Of course, this is only the beginning.
Lalaji enters his house, ensconced in a narrow gali, labelling his unmarried sisters by their physical characteristics: one is overweight, another is dark, the third is a hoyden; only the oldest, the ‘achcha bacchcha’ (good girl), is naturally the only one who is fair and demure. No, I’m not kidding.

So that’s what we get. Lalaji negotiating the ‘burden’ of his ‘unbyaahi behens’ on one hand, and attempting to balance his filial duties with his own desires on the other. Waiting in the wings is a childhood sweetheart (Bhumi Pednekar), with her loudmouth father (Neeraj Sood) hovering. Marriage brokers are required when there are marriages to be arranged with money and goods changing hands (Seema Pahwa). And how far behind can dowry deaths be?
I’m not sure which made me more uneasy: the mothballed plot detailing, the contrivances, the high-pitched melodrama that used to be part and parcel of movies we thought we’d deep-sixed decades ago; or the conviction that low-rent family dramas, with their uneasy mix of humour and crassness that was once hugely popular, are the way out for a beleaguered Bollywood.

Lalaji, who is much older than the women he is surrounded by, is given a reason later in the film, which causes more sniffles. Everyone has the opportunity to cry at a funeral. Finally, after everyone on screen has dried their tears, a few rays of hope appear. Remember how they used to throw in a shard of progressiveness after the film had bludgeoned us with saccharine? When the film reaches the three-fourth mark, after the loss of a young girl and, wait for it, a kidney, it becomes a beacon for girls to stand on their own two feet and fight the evils of dowry.
Hurrah, but this better-late-than-never change of heart appears to be a calculated afterthought, designed to keep the carping so-called progressives happy after the supposedly traditional types have had their fill.
The absolute commitment that Akshay displays in his role as ‘bada bhaiyya,’ not slipping out of character even once, is what keeps us going. The ladies aren’t too bad either, whenever they get a chance to speak up. When they are shown to be their own people, accepting their size and skin tone, the film shifts into a more positive mode. You wonder if this is the only way to top-line the ‘bhaiyya mere, rakhi ka bandhan toh nibhaana’ vibe for today’s audiences. Show us the horrors of dowry and the other evils associated with this never-ending tradition of shaadi-vaadi, but also be aware of the responsibility of an artist with such a large catchment. Start with a girl who is happy to go it alone, rather than hurriedly, almost apologetically, ending with it, and watch how the world changes.
Raksha Bandhan, starring Akshay Kumar and directed by Aanand L Rai, hits theatres today, alongside Aamir Khan’s highly anticipated film Laal Singh Chaddha. Bhumi Pednekar, Sadia Khateeb, Sahejmeen Kaur, Smrithi Srikanth, and Deepika Khanna play pivotal roles in Raksha Bandhan, a film about sibling bonds.

The first reviews for Raksha Bandhan have begun to pour in on Twitter, and it appears that Anand L Rai and Akshay Kumar have hit the ball out of the park with their latest film. After two major flops this year, Bachchhan Panday and Samrat Prithviraj, Akshay Kumar appears to have finally struck a chord with the audience with his family entertainer.
In terms of what moviegoers are saying about the film, Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan has been dubbed “the best movie of the year” and “the best movie of the actor’s career.” “#RakshaBandhan is @akshaykumar’s best film to date. @bhumipednekar is excellent. @aanandlrai has made the best film of 2022. It is a small film with a big heart. Congratulations to all #AkshayKumar fans on the biggest hit of 2022 “a Twitter user wrote
